Tourism in Rajasthan by Ajay Panwar

Rajasthan is located in the northwestern part of India and is bounded by Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan is one of the most popular tourist places of India. Thousands of domestic as well as alien tourists visit to India just because of Rajasthan. With its rich cultural heritage, sand dunes, safaris and wildlife, the state has a lot to offer in terms of tourism. Rajasthan seems to be an open museum, where the tourists can get a glimpse of the socio-cultural pattern of the state.

The Rajasthan is filled with numerous legends of heroic acts of the Rajput Kings who began to rule Rajasthan from 9th century AD. The chivalrous Kings of Rajputana Prithviraj Chauhan and Maharana Pratap of Mewar fought many wars to save the honor of their land, people and traditions. The State of Rajasthan was formed at the time of Independence of India when the Rajputana's 18 Princely States, two chieftain and one British administered province were merged.

Rajasthan has been the house of royalty in India. Also called the Land Of Princes Rajasthan is a perfect destination to witness the magnificent lives the Maharajas of Rajputana must have led. In terms of heritage Rajasthan is one of the leading States in India. There are large number of Forts, palaces and Havellis which are world renown for their architectural wonder, delicate carvings and colorful splendor.
The cities of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Amber are all living examples of the royalty that once resided in Rajasthan. Jaisalmer, The golden city of Jaisalmer, which lies courageously as the western sentinel of India, is a place worth visiting. The magnificent wood- and stone-carved mansions and buildings display the love of the Rajputs towards the fine arts. The language spoken in Jaisalmer is Marwari, Rajasthani and Hindi. The climate of this city is of typical desert character. Population of this city is quite low compared to the other parts of the state. The best time to visit this desert city is the winter season when the heat becomes comparatively low. The most famous of the local festivals is the camel fair that is held during the winter season of the year. Camel dances, camel races, folk dance, and music are some of the major attractions of this place. It is also known as the desert festival.

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is a land of natural beauty and great history. It has a flourishing tourism industry, also known as pink City. The palaces of Jaipur are the favorite spots for tourists, both Indian and foreign. Many old palaces and forts in Jaipur have been converted into heritage hotels. Rajasthan's this beautiful city Jaipur, was the stronghold of a clan of rulers whose three hill forts and series of palaces in the city are important attractions. Known as the PinkCity because of the colour of the stone used exclusively in the walled city, Jaipur's bazaars sell embroidered leather shoes, blue pottery, tie and dye scarves and other exotic wares. Western Rajasthan itself forms a convenient circuit, in the heart of the Thar desert which has shaped its history, lifestyles and architecture.
Pushkar Fair held at Pushkar village 11 km from Ajmer in Rajasthan for twelve days annually held at the end of October or starting month of November. It has the world's only temple for Lord Brahma. It is the world's largest Camel fair and has the world famous Sarovar with 52 Ghats surrounding it.This cultural and trade cum religious tour is an attractive and lively spectacle with Rajasthani men and women in their colourful traditional attire, saffron-robed and thousands of bulls, cows, sheep, goats, horses and camels in richly decorated saddles. Perhaps the largest cattle in the world, it attracts more than one lakh people, and from all over Rajasthan as well as tourists from different parts of India and abroad.
